Descendants of Herzen in our hotel
On the 6th of April, 2012 Russia celebrated the 200th anniversary of the birthday of Alexander Herzen (1767-1846), the man who is sometimes called the first Russian political blogger.
Alexander Herzen is a Russian writer and publicist. He wrote a number of brilliant works of art ("Who’s to blame?”, “My Past and Thoughts”, etc.). Herzen pronounced humanism, realism, high ethical views. As a result he was compelled to spend much of his life in exile.
About three hundred of Herzen’s descendants living all over the world came home of his famous ancestor, to honor his memory.
Herzen House Hotel is situated in St.Petersburg at Bolshaya Morskaya street (formal Herzen street). The Hotel’s named after Herzen because he had living at that particular building during 1841-1842.
Alexander Herzen was an illegitimate son of a wealthy landowner Yakovlev – who invented a scion of a surname, originating from the German word “herz” means - “heart”.
As the fates decree the most time being away from Russia, he lived with dream of a family house, where all close to his heart people will bring together under one roof.
Herzen House Hotel has recently become such home for his descendants. On the eve of the memorable day we were visited by Joël Amphoux and his wife. The roots of the distinguished guests go to the youngest daughter Olga Herzen, she was grandmother of Mr. Amphoux .
According to historical information: Olga (1850-1953) lived a long, dignified life, becoming a founder of the clan, Rist, Mono and Amphoux, has maintained the tradition bequeathed by his father, laid up a considerable part of his archive, and later passed to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Metro station “Admiralteyskaya” built for convenience of the Herzen House Hotel Guests
We are glad to announce that one of the most beautiful Petersburg metro station “ “Admiralteyskaya”” was opened.
It’s situated next to the Herzen House hotel….just about 5 minutes by walk distance.
“Admiralteyskaya” has become the deepest metro station in Russia – the length of the escalators is 120 meters.
Entrance to the station is located at the intersection of Malaya Morskaya Street and Kirpichniy pereulok. The station is the best way for visiting the central part of the city – Dvortsovaya Square, Isaac’s Square, Admiralteistvo and Nevsky prospect.
You will be excited of the beautiful interior. Naval theme prevails in its interior decoration.

Day of Navy fleet of Russia celebrates annually on the last Sunday of July. St. Petersburg is a maritime city.

The Russian Navy was founded in 1696, under boat-loving Tsar Peter the Great who built St. Petersburg specifically as a base for his new fleet.Traditionally on this day in the Neva go warships. Some of them may visit the tourists. You can see a parade of military ships, submarines, and civilian vessels down the Neva. In honor of the Russian Navy Day colorful fireworks meet skies close-up with Peter and Paul Fortress.

Michael Chorost – our honoured Guest
Herzen House had the honour to reception and met with Michael Chorost, Ph.D.
Michael is a famous person all over the world. He came to Russia to representative his book which is now available in Russian.
Michael Chorost was born with severe loss of hearing due to rubella, his hearing was partially restored with a cochlear implant in 2001. He subsequently wrote a memoir of the experience, titled Rebuilt: How Becoming Part Computer Made Me More Human.
In August 2006 Rebuilt won the PEN/USA Book Award for Creative Nonfiction. Dr. Chorost has published in Wired, The Futurist, The Scientist, Technology Review, and SKY (Delta’s inflight magazine). He co-wrote a PBS television show titled The 22nd Century which aired in January 2007. He now lives in Washington.

St. Petersburg City Day (Dyen Goroda)
Saint Petersburg was founded by Peter I on 27 May, 1703.
Many of Russia’s bigger towns and cities have a City Day on which they celebrate their culture and history.
St. Petersburg will be celebrating it’s 308th anniversary this year and if you are anywhere remotely near the centre the festivities will be impossible to miss. As Petersburgers love their city with an almost maniacal fervor, you can expect the party to last all weekend. Nevsky is typically closed and the citizens take to the street en masse, clad in costume wigs or silly hats, clutching balloons, ice creams or adult beverages as they march towards Palace Square for free concerts, the Admiralty lawn for games, and the embankments to ooh and aah over the fireworks.
The most events traditionally take place at Nevsky Prospect and Dvortsovaya Ploshad’ ( Palace Square) .

Countess Clotilda fon Rintelen preferred Herzen House Hotel in the annual visit to Russia.
For Clotilda and her guests was organized traditional Russian tea with pancakes and the Russian samovar. The countess always had special feeling in relation to Russian traditions and has been extremely touched by such hearty welcome. The love To Russia and enthusiasm for Russian traditions expressed in the titled person not casually.
The countess - the special guest of Charitable Pushkin ball. In her, nee countess Fon Merenberg, Russian history was weaved in especially image, Clotilda - the descendant at once two best known surnames for Russian history - and, Pushkin, and crowned Romanov’s.
The important fact is that Clotilda fon Rintelen has got world fame because of keen employment by charity, the titled person showed special attention in relation to Russia. It has started to help Aleksandrovsky hospital with 1991, then carried the equipment to Peterhof, supported children’s homes. For 18 years of acquaintance to Russia created by the countess «the help Union» has collected already millions dollars.
At the end of charitable mission at St.-Petersburg the countess left hotel, having wrote some warm words in the guest book of hotel and promised that in the following visit to Russia she will stop in Herzen House Hotel.
